  14. I was finally going to buy the FastLane Z3, but when I called the few
  15. Amiga "shops" in Holland to check out the current prices, everyone told
  16. me that they didn't have one in stock. One even said that they weren't
  17. even manufactured anymore, while another said that they were build in
  18. small amounts and hard to get. (Which of these too is true? 'Cause I
  19. still want a fast SCSI Controller, like Fastlane & A4091 but they seem
  20. to have disappeared?)

  22. Anyway then I asked about the CyberVision64, which was also on my whish-
  23. list and I got the same response, not in stock, hard to get, short supply.
  24. Only one dealer had them in stock, so I immediately ordered one, not
  25. wanting to wait for weeks to get one from the other dealers.
  26. The next day it arrived, I unpacked it, read the manual and installed it.
  27. But now I have some questions that popped up when testing the board,

  29. I am completely new to grahics boards and I hope that you can/will answer
  30. my questions in very simple english, thanks!

  33. My Hardware setup is:

  35. - A4000/040, 2 Chip & 8 FastMem.
  36.    A3640 v3.1, Buster -11.
  37. - CyberVision64, 4Mb, S/N 81xxxxx.
  38.    Supplied Software: Install Disk v2.13, v2.15 & PhotoGenics Lite.
  39. - Monitor used for testing:
  40.    17" YaKUMO PS1764 (= MAG ....) Monitor, Multi-scanning at horizontal
  41.    frequencies of 30 kHz to 64 kHz, vertical frequencies of 50 Hz to
  42.    100 Hz.

  45. 1. RESOLUTIONS/COLOUR DEPTHS:
  46.    - I have bought the 4Mb version, but I can NOT open any 16 Bit screen,
  47.    1024x768 24 Bit screen and maybe also not the 1600x1200 8 Bit screen,
  48.    but this last one I am not sure about if I could open it or not.
  49.    Sure is the 16 Bit screens (2Mb) and the 24 Bit 1024x768 screen (4Mb).
  50.    Why can I not open them?
  51.    Do I have to update the software or is it a Hardware problem?
  52.    Any solutions?

  54.    - Is it normal if you switch screens, that the monitor "blanks" out
  55.    for a second?

  57.    - If I open a 800x600 24 Bit WB screen, the memory that I have left
  58.    would be around 1.9 of 2 Chip Mem & 4.8 of 8 Fast Mem.  Is this normal?
  59.    I do have several Commodities running in the background, normally
  60.    something around 1.5 Chip & 6.7 Fast is left.

  62.    - Is it normal when you view a picture in its own screen 320x240(?) in
  63.    any colour depth(?), that vertical lines appear and disappear (only in
  64.    this resolution?)? Why does it happen?

  66.    - Haven't tried it out yet, so how does it "work" if you want to have
  67.    a 24-bit Workbench, start e.g. DPaint 5 in 8-bit CVScreen, and the
  68.    Monitor has memory for the screen settings, is it just like switching
  69.    screens, even if you switch resolutions? No more different than
  70.    switching from a 8 colour WB to a 256 colour PageStream?

  72.    - None of CV Resolotions/Colour Depths is video recordable/usable for
  73.    Genlock? (But with the upcoming? video encoder it would be all usable?)

  77. 2. VIDEO MEMORY:
  78.    - What exactly is the difference between the 2Mb and the 4Mb version?
  79.    Only that the 4Mb version can also display the 1024x768 and 1280x1024
  80.    in 24 Bit/16 Bit, or is the extra 2Mb used for something else too?

  82.    - I read in a review of a prototype of the CyberVision64 that it's
  83.    Memory could be expanded to 16 Mb. Is this true? The manual doesn't
  84.    mention anything about that the memory could be expanded.
  85.    If it's true, which memory chips can be used and can you check through
  86.    software how many memory is on board?

  88.    - By the way, should the memory on the board be "viewable" in Workbench
  89.    as extra FastMem? 'Cause how can you tell how much memory you have
  90.    other than checking out the chips.
  91.    (You could open a specific resolution/colour depth screen, such as
  92.    1024x768 24 Bit, too see if you have 4Mb, but I cannot open such a
  93.    screen even though I bought the 4Mb version and all the Memory Chip
  94.    sockets do have memory chips in them. That's the reason I ask if it
  95.    is checkable?)

  97.    - And what use would the extra memory be?
  98.    If you open a 800x600 24 Bit resolution screen +/- 2-4 Mb FastMem
  99.    disappears for each new public screen, would the extra memory above
  100.    the 4Mb stop this disappearing of FastMem and use the VideoMem instead?
  101.    If not, and you truly want to multitask with several 24-bit screens
  102.    open, you really should have a lot fast mem!?

  104. 3. PASS-THROUGH:
  105.    - What is meant by "pass-through" Amiga Signal, how does it exactly work?
  106.    Is the 30 cm long (incl. connectors) connector cable used for this
  107.    purpose? Connect this in the VGA Adapter in the Amiga Video output and
  108.    the CV64 Input connector.
  109.    What do you really see happen on your multiscan monitor (30kHz+) if this
  110.    connection is made and a standard Amiga Screen appears in the foreground.
  111.    I don't quite understand what it is doing, and can not try it out for
  112.    myself yet 'cause I haven't got the VGA Adapter by me.

  114.    - What does the ScanDoubler/FlickerFixer do together with the CV64?

  116. 4. JUMPER SETTINGS:
  117.    - Should the Jumper Settings as described in the manual really be
  118.    set as in the manual, expect for JP1? 'Cause that is not how I got it.
  119.    JP1 has open jumper, JP2 has no jumper, JP3 has 3 open jumpers, JP4 has
  120.    3 closed jumpers, JP5 has 3 closed jumpers, CON2a has no jumpers, CON2b
  121.    has no jumpers and CON3 has no jumpers!

  123.    - What exactly does JP3 & JP4 do?

  125.    - What are the best jumper settings for my setup, and what does 'open'
  126.    in the manual mean? E.g. JP1 - Slow Buster Mode -> open = on, but in
  127.    my situation should be off = closed!?

  137.    - What is the latest software version for CV64 and where is it avai-

  140.    - How are updates handled, are they send to you, do you have to visit
  141.    their BBS (are they preparing a Web Page/FTP Site for support/updates?).
  142.    Is the software for CV64 different from CyberGraphX for the other
  143.    graphic boards or is it the same but with extra files for the other
  144.    boards and you can use those updates as well, but with the CyberVision
  145.    Monitor File?

  147.    - Is there somewhere a list available that lists the programs that
  148.    support the CV64 directly (through drivers?), the programs that work
  149.    100% in CV-Screens, programs that are not 100% on CV-Screens (Screen
  150.    corruptions) and programs that don't work on CyberVision?

  152.    - In the manual it is mentioned that there are drivers for AMax IV,
  153.    XIPaint and more importantly SCALA and others (what others? Does
  154.    LightWave have a 24 bit Driver?) to use them in high colour depths
  155.    (even 24 Bit?), but where are they? They were not included on disk.

  157.    - Which Benchmark programs can you use to test the speed of the board?

  159.    - Could someone expain exactly how the Enviroment Variables & CVMode
  160.    work and settings I should use for optimal (faster?) use and how do
  161.    you set these env variables after installation?
  162.    How come Planes2Fast, NoPassThrough & KeepAmigaVideo aren't set at
  163.    installation time?

  165.    - In another review it said that if you wanted to speed up the "memory-
  166.    handling" you can use the 'SetCVisionValues', where is this command?
  167.    Is it advisable to use this function or is this similar to overclocking
  168.    cpu's?

  170. 6. PLANAR-TO-CHUNKY:
  171.    - Planar-To-Chunky-Pixel Converter in Hardware, what exactly is this
  172.    used for?

  174.    - In the prototype review it was mentioned that the software did not
  175.    support this Converter yet, as of which software version is it
  176.    supported?

  178. 7. EXPANDABILITY:
  179.    - In their german ads they mentioned Digital VideoBus for possible
  180.    expansions and a Connector for Video-Encoder with FBAS/S-VHS Output,
  181.    what/where are they?

  183.    - Is Phase5 developing any additional cards for the expansion bus
  184.    (= Digital Videobus?), like the JPEG/MPEG Card mentioned in the manual?
  185.    Is this maybe the same as the 2-GO! Project that they advertised in
  186.    the german magazines?
  187.    What happened too it, in their new ads it isn't mentioned anymore,
  188.    neither is the FastLane! (BTW Does MicroniK, Germany still have
  189.    FastLane's, as they still mention them in their ads?)

  191.    - Is it really true that the FastLane Z3 isn't manufactured anymore
  192.    and could the 2-GO! (Z3, DSP, RISC MultiMedia board) project of Phase5
  193.    really be the same as the PowerUp (RISC) Board that suddenly appeared
  194.    from them?

  196. 8. MONITORS:
  197.    - What does the on-board electronic Monitor switcher do?
  198.    - Any good recomendations for good value 17" Monitors, how about this
  199.    MAG/YaKUMO Monitor or CTX, Sony, Liyama 8617E/Pro 9017E, Daytek/Daewoo,
  200.    ADI, NEC Monitors and any others?
